ANNUAL SUPPORT:
PLEDGES- (MISSION AND SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION)
PURPOSE: The Samaritan Homeless interim Program (SHIP) is a private, not for profit community agency that secures emergency housing and associated services for homeless families and individuals in Somerset County. Since its inception in 1985 SHIP has provided more than 12,000 nights of shelter to over 1200 residents of Somerset County, who for a variety of reasons, became or were about to become homeless, and for whom no other source of assistance was available. In addition SHIP distributes emergency clothing and food to those in need. SHIP also helps individuals find jobs. Most of the families housed by SHIP have heads of household who were employed and are earning too little to meet local housing costs, but too much to qualify for standard social service assistance. SHIP is filling a vital need as the deepening recession causes more and more of the lower paid members of our communities to slide into the homeless ranks.
Much of the recent support has been focused upon rebuilding and repairing flood damage in the Somerville area.
