Missions & Ministries: Christian Social Concerns

There are a vast number of programs both within and outside of the United Methodist Church doing a tremendous amount of work in the ongoing battle to help those in need. The Missions and Social Concerns Commission, with the advice of the Pastor have chosen the following as especially needing the support of Bishop Janes Church. Some of the programs have been underwritten by Bishop Janes Church for many years and a deep relationship of caring concern has grown up and matured. Other programs are newer. They all share one thing in common however, a deep devotion to helping others.

Brooklyn Methodist Hospital

LOCATION: Brooklyn, New York

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
PLEDGES - RED STOCKINGS (MISSIONS AND SOCIAL CONCERNS & EDUCATION COMMISSIONS)

PURPOSE: The Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, founded in 1581, is a teaching hospital which provides medical services to 150,000 patients a year. It has special programs for the elderly, and has trained more than 2500 nurses. Christmas time, Bishop Janes' Sunday School fills cardboard "Red Stockings" with money to help raise funds for the hospital.

Christian Approach to Urban-Suburban-Encounter (C.A.U.S.E.)

LOCATION: Jersey City, N.J.

ANNUAL SUPPORT:

RUMMAGE SALE (REMAINING CLOTHING)

PURPOSE: C.A.U.S.E. is a ministry that links Churches in Jersey City with suburban congregations. It operates a thrift shop which sells used clothing and toys. Bishop Janes has contributed used clothing and volunteers to this effort. In addition clothing packets and food rations are prepared for distribution in emergency situations.

United Methodist Homes of New Jersey

LOCATION: Ten sites in seven towns within New Jersey. The towns are Newton, Ocean Grove, Ocean City, Collingswood, East Orange and Plainfield.

ANNUAL SUPPORT:

PURPOSE: The mission of the United Methodist Homes of New Jersey is to serve the physical, mental and spiritual needs of persons age 65 or older residing in the New Jersey area of the United Methodist Church without regard to race, color, sex, creed, or national origin. This important mission is carried out by providing residential and health care facilities, outreach services to those who are not residents of UMH facilities, and consultation and resource information to others serving the elderly. There are now 10 facilities operated by the United Methodist Homes of New Jersey, providing residential and health care to about 1,200 aging persons each year.

Morristown Memorial Hospital Chaplaincy

LOCATION: Morristown, N.J.

ANNUAL SUPPORT:

PURPOSE: Morristown Memorial Hospital, through the Department of Pastoral Care, offers the services of chaplains to patients, their families, and to staff. Chaplaincy services focus on the spiritual and emotional needs of people. Services provided include calling on patients and/or their families on request, facilitating the ministry of area clergy and lay visitors, providing devotional literature and worship services, providing consultations and support to hospital staff, and interpreting the importance of the spiritual needs of patients/families to the members of the health care team.

Ridge Oak Care Fund

LOCATION: Basking Ridge, N.J.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

PURPOSE: Ridge Oak is a community designed for Senior Citizens of low or moderate income who want to continue to live in the Somerset Hills. It was originally developed as a joint project of churches, including Bishop Janes, in Basking Ridge. Although Ridge Oak is not-a nursing home, inevitably the residents grow older and require additional services. The continuing care fund is designed to make it possible for them to have access to these additional services at Ridge Oak as they need them.

Somerset County Chaplaincy Council

LOCATION: Bridgewater, New Jersey

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

PURPOSE: The Chaplaincy Council is an ecumenical organization which ministers to the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of offenders and their loved ones regardless of religious belief. It has the following goals; providing guidance, prayer support, and opportunities for worship; offering the comfort and strength of wholesome, honest companionship; actively promoting improvements in the criminal justice system; helping ex-offenders to develop productive life styles. In addition they assume responsibility for educating the community about the needs of offenders, their families, and their victims.

Pastor's Discretionary Fund

LOCATION: Bishop Janes United Methodist Church, Basking Ridge, New Jersey

ANNUAL SUPPORT:

PURPOSE: The purpose of this fund is to provide the pastors of Bishop Janes Church with financial resources to help individuals, both members and non members in the community who require temporary assistance in time of crisis.

Community Association for Ministry to People-Youth Development Program (C.A.M.P.-Y.D.P.)

LOCATION: Paterson, New Jersey

PURPOSE: The Community association for Ministry to People is a multifaceted project which meets the needs of inner city families in Paterson. Summer school, and after school programs are provided as well as a used clothing distribution center. Most children who attend CAMP YDP are from broken homes. Fees are based on household income. Many individuals in Bishop Janes congregation have given their time and talents to this program in a variety of ways ranging from painting rooms and making building repairs to collecting books for a library for the children. In summers past Bishop Janes parishioners have opened their homes to children from the C.A.M.P. program for a week of fellowship.

Bernards Township Municipal Alliance (Scope Team)-Basking Ridge,

Last Blast Graduation Party, Bernardsville

LOCATION: Basking Ridge and Bernardsville, N.J.

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
PLEDGES- (MISSIONS AND SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION)

PURPOSE: As an acknowledgment of their accomplishments and to provide supervised drug and alcohol free recreation, the graduating classes at Ridge High School and Bernards High School are offered, through these separate programs, several activities throughout their senior year. These culminate in an all night graduation celebration. The Bernards Township program is a model for other school districts to consider. The Scope Team is a coalition of community members concerned about drug and alcohol abuse. One focus is on education of parents and another on alternate recreational events for teens.

Somerset Hills Fellowship of Churches

LOCATION: Bernardsville, New Jersey

ANNUAL SUPPORT:

PURPOSE: The Somerset Hills Fellowship of Churches provides a common focus for the Churches of the Somerset Hills on issues of concern. It also provides a forum for the pastors of the churches to get together to discuss problems and joint programs.

Aldersgate Camperships for Children

LOCATION: Northern New Jersey Conference Area Basking Ridge, New Jersey

ANNUAL SUPPORT:

PURPOSE: In order to ensure that children and youth from the Northern New Jersey Conference area can attend camping programs at Camp Aldersgate, this project funds camperships which pay the camp fees for individual children. In addition, at Bishop Janes Church, a fund is available to provide camperships to Bishop Janes youth to promote attendance at Camp Aldersgate.

Inter-Hospitality Network -IHN

LOCATION: BJUMC, Basking Ridge, New Jersey

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
FREQUENT & NUMEROUS DONATIONS OF TIME & FOOD BY INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS

PURPOSE: Interfaith Hospitality Network of Somerset County is a non-profit interfaith ministry committed to uniting the religious community of Somerset County to provide shelter, meals and assistance to homeless families and single women.

The mission is to reach out as messengers of God, and reflecting His un- conditional love with compassion and acceptance, providing help, hope and a safe haven for our guests while they seek permanent employment and affordable housing.

Food Bank Network of Somerset County

LOCATION: Bridgewater, New Jersey

ANNUAL SUPPORT:

FREQUENT AND NUMEROUS DONATIONS OF FOOD BY INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS

In addition to monetary support, many members of Bishop Jane's Church donate their time at the Food Bank warehouse to sort food, and they also work at distribution points to offer food to the needy.

PURPOSE: This Food Bank distributes food collected by various religious and other organizations to the disadvantaged and elderly who would not otherwise have enough to eat. Many of the recipients of the food are the working poor whose wages are not sufficient to meet their needs for shelter and food. Bishop Janes Church collects food that members have donated once each month and takes it too the Food Bank warehouse where it is so?-sorted by volunteers and ultimately finds it's way to pantries in various locations in Somerset County. On designated days individuals come to the Food Bank pantries, are interviewed to determine if their status has changed, and if qualified they are given a bag of groceries which contains, when available, a balanced set of foods designed to supplement whatever food the recipient might be able to obtain themselves.

Plainfield Second Street Youth Center

LOCATION: Plainfield, New Jersey

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
PLEDGES - (MISSIONS AND SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION)

PURPOSE: The center provides urban youth with recreational, cultural, and vocational activities. It sponsors after school and summer care for 6-11 year olds, day care including lunch for 2 1/2 to 5 year olds, and Head Start for preschoolers from 3 to 5 years of age including breakfast, lunch and a snack. A program for Kindergarten children provides after school care from 12Noon to 6PM including lunch thus allowing parents to be employed. The fees for this program are paid by the parents on a sliding fee scale. Teen Rapport provides recreational activities and career awareness programs, tutoring service, and health education. All of these programs involve children with a wide range of backgrounds and capabilities. Plainfield Second Street Youth Center was initiated by Bishop Janes Church in the early 1970s.

Somerset County Chaplaincy to The Elderly

LOCATION: Nine nursing homes in Somerset County

ANNUAL SUPPORT:

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

PURPOSE: The Chaplaincy provides spiritual sustenance to residents in nine nursing homes in Somerset County. Six dedicated chaplains are currently working in the nursing homes and it is their salaries that Bishop Janes Church is helping to sustain. Workshops are also held for volunteers and healthcare professionals to provide information on the concerns of nursing home residents. In addition, a further help that is now offered is in-service training to nurses' aides.

Middle Earth

LOCATION: Somerville, N.J.

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
PLEDGES-(MISSIONS AND SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION)

PURPOSE: Middle earth is a youth counseling service, which provides a 24-hour hot line telephone facility to aid runaway youth, potential runaway youth, and parents. It also offers a walk in service 5 days a week. Both of these contact points identify the needs of troubled youth and direct them to appropriate Social Service Agencies. In addition, Middle Earth operates a job bank to help youth obtain employment, and provides crisis intervention counseling.

Somerset Hills Hospice

LOCATION: Somerville, New Jersey

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
PLEDGES- (MISSION AND SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION)

PURPOSE: The Hospice provides a way for patients with terminal illnesses to die with dignity. Programs involve either a terminally ill person residing in a hospice setting for the last days of their lives or in some cases where home care is essential or preferred, help is provided to the caregiver to allow the patient to remain at home.

Training Inc.

LOCATION: Newark, New Jersey

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
PLEDGES (MISSON AND SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION)

PURPOSE: This program, which is administered by the Community and Continuing Education Area of Essex County College in cooperation with The Institute of Cultural Affairs, is designed to train inner city adults (mainly single women) to be able to get and hold jobs as secretaries and other entry level office workers. The program is unique in that it stresses not only the skills necessary to do the job, but also the life skills needed to be able to successfully cope with handling the job on a day to day basis. There is an emphasis on improving the self-image of the student. Being on time, commuting and handling personal finances and managing childcare are all stressed. The success rate of this program is in excess of S5A/. Bishop Janes funding helps to pay the tuition for those attending.

Northern New Jersey Conference Student Loan Fund

LOCATION: Northern New Jersey Conference

ANNUAL SUPPORT:

PURPOSE: This fund provides scholarships to United Methodist Youth to help with college expenses.

The Market Street Mission

LOCATION: Morristown, New Jersey

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
CHRISTMAS TREES - (TOWER CLUB), FOOD DONATION - (MISSION AND SOCIAL CONCERNS) (WHITE GIFT SUNDAY)

PURPOSE: For nearly 102 years the Market Street Mission has provided hope for the needy and a structured environment for the unfortunate and homeless people of the Morristown area. No one is ever turned away from the Mission doors or made to feel they are without hope for a solid future. The number of homeless men, families in poverty, alcohol and drug addicted young people and those suffering from hunger are increasing at an alarming rate. Through its many programs the Mission is reaching out to these people.

Appalachian Service Project

LOCATION: Appalachia, U.S.A.

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
MISSION AND SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION (SPECIAL GIFT)

PURPOSE: The Appalachian Service Project provides an opportunity for Families or individuals from many Churches to help the people of Appalachia to repair their homes. Each group must be sponsored to pay for materials used. This program provides an opportunity for youth and adults to help others, but also to grow in service and to know and appreciate the people of Appalachia.

Church Builders Plus

LOCATION: Northern New Jersey Conference

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
CHRISTMAS TREES - (TOWER CLUB)

PURPOSE: There are many occasions when local churches have need of help with their physical plant. Perhaps the congregation is new and hasn't the money for a new furnace. Maybe a fire devastated the entire church building and rebuilding is beyond the scope of available funds. The Church Builders concept is that shares in a fund that can help individual churches are "sold" to all church Congregations. On occasion when the need is especially acute congregations are encouraged to give additional amounts.

Red Bird Missionary Conference

LOCATION: Beverly, Kentucky

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

PURPOSE: Red Bird Missionary Conference consists of several programs comprising an outreach ministry to the people of Appalachia. These include a Medical Center, residence community, and help and support for individual Churches. The United Methodist Women of Bishop Janes Church provide funds for a scholarship to Red Bird School.

Flying Mission-Steve and Gail Quigg

LOCATION: USA

ANNUAL SUPPORT:
PLEDGES - (MISSION AND SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION)

PURPOSE: The Quigg's are now training pilots in the United States for Missionary work around the world. Pilots they train serve in counties where there are few roads and those that exist are impassable during parts of the year and barely passable for the rest of the year. The flying missions make it possible for missionaries to get deep in the jungle to visit villages and for doctors to administer to sick individuals in their home villages. Steve is the pilot trainer and Gail is the office manager and dispatcher for this unique mission project.
