This Week's Scripture Lesson(s)

 From Luke and Matthew

Luke 21:5-7
5 When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said, 6 "As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down." 7 They asked him, "Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?"

Matthew 23:27-28
27"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. 28So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Luke 20:45-47
45 In the hearing of all the people he said to the disciples, 46 "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets. 47 They devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation."

Matthew 25:31-46
31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.' 37 Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' 40 And the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.' 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44 Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?' 45 Then he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

This is the word of the Lord.    Thanks be to God.

Worship Series

Walking With Christ through Holy Week

What happened between Palm Sunday and Good Friday during the last week of Jesus’ life? A great deal! During this Lenten series, we’ll explore the answer to that question, and reflect together on the implications of that week’s events for our faith journey. With our theme, “Walking with Christ Through His Last Week,” we will devote each Sunday of Lent to one day of the week that we call Holy Week.

  • February 14 – (Sunday before Ash Wednesday) No Turning Back; On to Jerusalem
  • February 14 – Ash Wednesday worship in our sanctuary 7:30 PM
  • February 21 – Jesus’ Last Week: Sunday of Palms: From Hosanna! to Holy Cleansing
  • February 28 – Last Week: A Question of Authority
  • March   7 – Jesus’ Last Week: Warnings, a Lament and a Judgment
  • March 14 – Last Week: A Beautiful Deed and a “Friend”
  • March 21 – Jesus’ Last Week: A Holy Meal, and In the Garden
  • March 28 – Jesus’ Last Week: The Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus
  • April   4 – From Darkness to Light
  • April 11 – Where Do We Go From Here?

Through the use of the labyrinth, which will be set up in the chancel area during the Lenten season, and chancel displays, pictures of scenes in and around Jerusalem and music appropriate to each day’s theme, our faith journey will be enriched by reflecting on the powerful events that took place in the last week of Jesus’ life.

Copies of the Lenten Devotional Booklet will be available in the Welcome Center for use during the Lenten Season, and, information about Walking the Labyrinth will be placed in the Welcome Center.

  • Haiti Earthquake Relief

Bishop Janes UMC Welcomes the Prayer Labyrinth!!

    Through Holy Week

A labyrinth is a path of prayer, a walking meditation that can become a whole body prayer experience. A labyrinth offers an opportunity to take time out of our busy lives to refresh, renew, reflect and reconnect with God.

A labyrinth is not a maze. A maze is designed to result in some wrong choices, dead ends, and frustration.

A labyrinth is designed for you to FIND your way toward a goal along a focused path; it facilitates a personal journey to the cross and back out into the world.

Labyrinths probably existed in Greek culture as far back as 1200 BCE and labyrinths have been found on every continent. We know that a labyrinth was placed in a Christian church in Algiers, North Africa around 324 CE. Labyrinths have become increasingly popular in recent history. Some scholars believe that this revived interest is a result of people seeking spiritual rather than religious experiences, an experience that balances rational thought with creativity, and/or the need for simple respite from the whirl of change and the fast pace of life around us.

The labyrinth in the Bishop Janes Chancel is open to the public each day.

     Why Pray the Labrinth?

    Through Holy Week

Praying the labyrinth wil help you:

    • Connect with God in a new and special way,
    • Pray for yourself and others in need.
    • Take time for yourself to reflect on your relationship with God, now and in the future.
    • Reflect on the paths that God wants you to take in your life.
    • Walk, pray and worship in a new, creative way.
    • Remind yourself of your faith journey, as you walk alone, yet with others.
    • Remember the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross during this Lenten season and throughout Holy Week.

The labyrinth is placed on the chancel floor in the sanctuary, lit by candles and available to those who choose to walk the path. Please remove your shoes; and if you choose, wear a pair of the socks that are available near the entrance. If you wear the socks, please, after walking the labyrinth, remove them and place them in the basket indicated for used socks.

A basket of stones is provided, as well. Sometimes labyrinth walkers like to makr a spot of spiritual significance by placing a stone at that point in their labyrinth walk.

    ALL ARE WELCOME!!

     Book Discussion Group

    March 10  — 7:00 PM

This group usually meets in the Conference room of the Church on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM For more information, please contact Becky Hyde.

UPDATE: Change in Book Selection: Due to snow cancellation of the February meeting, Day After Night discussion will be March 10th.

Day After Night: This book is set in the British Mandate of Palestine in 1945 when the war is over and thousands of Jews escaped Europe. The tale focuses on the lives of four women who are detained at the Atlit Camp south of Hafia, Israel.

Have a Little Faith by Mitch Album will be discussed April 14h. This book is an anecdotal narrative of his personal experience with faith - losing it, and regaining it - interwoven with a tale about the lives of two men of God; one an aging rabbi, and the other, an African American pastor working in a ghetto.

     Beginnings, Journey to Faith

Participants can bring questions, gain knowledge, and form or deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ." You may use any version of the Bible you are comfortable with. All are encouraged and welcome. Please contact Monica Becker with questions, or if interested.

     R.I.S.E. (Risingville Intercommunity Service Efort)

    June 27  — July 3

We have heard back from the RISE Committee and we will be going JUNE 27-JULY 3, 2010. This summer mission project is open to High School students (finished 9th grade/finished 12th grade).

--Please mark your calendars with the dates of the trip. We do need adult leaders, so if you are interested, please let Kaleigh know ASAP. If you’d like to get involved in Youth Ministry, or have any questions, please contact Kaleigh at kaleigh.husseytomich@gmail.com or at the church office, 908-766-1108 X4.

The RISE program sends hundreds of youth and adult leaders to western New York state, for week-long missions to rehabilitate the homes of poor and challenged residents of Steuben County. RISE was founded in 1980 by the late Chatham UMC pastor Dale Forsman.

Each summer since 1980, youth and adults from churches throughout New Jersey and other states have packed their tools, old clothes, and work boots and headed for a rural area in the southern tier of the Appalachian Mountains of New York. There they spend one week out of their vacation working in small teams repairing homes for those who cannot help themselves.

     The Food Bank Opportunity

    2nd Saturday of Every Month
Thank you to the Bishop Janes UMC congregation for their continued faithfulness in supplying donations of food for the Somerset County Food Bank. Thank you also to Gordon Clark for his constant faithfulness in delivering grocery bags of food on an ongoing basis!

We have been made aware that donations to the food bank have been “down across the board and that the lower economy results in more need there.

A specific and immediate request has been made for canned meat, Parmalat (milk boxes) and jelly, but of course, any items are appreciated. --At the moment, the food bank seems to have quite a bit of peanut butter, but lacks matching jars of jelly. Generally, the following items are always welcome: cereal, macaroni & cheese, (peanut butter/jelly) crackers, soups, canned meats, stews, fruits, vegetables, tomato sauce, tuna fish and (Parmalot milk.) Also, for the children of these needy families; juice boxes, puddings, etc. and school supplies are always appreciated. Any items of this type may be dropped off to the church as sson as possible, and they shall be delivered at once. Thank you from your Missions & Social Concerns Ministry Team.

Prayer is offered for each staff member, for the worship service and for the education and youth ministries, and for the congregation as it gathers to worship. (Following this prayer time, the choir - whether it's Chancel, Bells, or GodSent - is led in prayer prior to worship. This prayer time asks God to provide power for the morning services and events.

Invitation: anyone who feels called by God to pray with this group is welcome to come to the conference room at 9:00 AM If the group is blessed by having numbers to large for the conference room, we'll find another location in which to pray together.

If so, we'd like to know, so that we may keep our mailing and distribution lists current. Please contact gail Nicholas if your reach information should change. You may contact her at the Church Office, 908-766-1108, x0; send her an e-mail message: grnicholas@aol.com, or write your information on the Fellowship pads during worship.

How to Contact Our Building Manager

Do you need to be in touch with our building manager, Doug Kreis? If so, please leave a note in his mail slot in the Church Office. If you wish to have assistance with a room which needs to be set up for a church event, please leave your name and contact info, such as home and/or cell phone numbers. This will make it easier for Doug to be in touch with you if he should need further information. Thank you.

     Name Tags

Please look for your name tag, located in the corridor, just off the sanctuary. The tags which have been updated, and no longer have pinned backings, which are more “garment friendly” are available for use at worship. Please remember to return name tags to the rack following worship. Special thanks to Vivian Fentress and Chris Pape for creating the name tags.
